Being a Changemaker means small actions can lead to big changes. You can make change by engaging with Senydd Cymru (Welsh Parliament), UK Parliament, or other channels to get your voice heard. So, it’s important to know which organisation has the power to make the change you’re campaigning for.

Climate & environment

Environmental awareness among youth is vital for preserving the Earth. By advocating for sustainable practices and policies, young people can contribute to a healthier planet for current and future generations. By taking action, young people can contribute to sustainable solutions, advocate for renewable energy, and push for policies that mitigate environmental degradation.

Economy and finance

Young people are increasingly affected by austerity and the cost of living crisis. Learning how to manage their finances and understanding the economy allows young individuals to shape their financial futures. By participating in economic discussions, they contribute to inclusive policies, sustainable growth, and reduced inequalities.

Education

Education is a cornerstone of children and young people’s experiences. Young people should feel fully informed to make decisions based on what education choices and funding are available to them. Young people can also contribute to shaping the future of education by sharing opinions on their experiences to inform the future of education in the UK.

Connecting with issues beyond the UK and campaigning to support social justice and peace overseas, young people learn solidarity with others beyond borders.

Health/mental health

Young people face health challenges and issues with access to healthcare. Depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders are amongst the leading causes of illness and disabilities for young people. Learn how you can campaign for health and mental health issues so everyone gets the support they need.

LGBTQI+ equality

Supporting LGBTQI+ rights ensures inclusivity and acceptance. Young people can advocate for equality, challenge discrimination, and create environments where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, can live authentically and without fear.

Political participation

Meaningful political participation empowers young people to shape their nation’s future and understand what political decisions are being made on their behalf. By participating, they ensure their voices are heard, contributing to a democratic and accountable society.

Racial equality

Understanding race and racism and campaigning for racial equality fosters a just society. Young people can fight systemic inequalities and champion equal opportunities, learning how to challenge discrimination and work towards dismantling structural barriers impacting the lives of people of colour.

Refugee crisis

By staying focused on the facts of migration rather than the political manipulation of information about the refugee crisis, young people can understand the complexity of offering protection in the context of divisive discrimination.

Being aware of social justice issues such as the fair distribution of wealth, privileges and opportunities, is a key part of building an equitable and compassionate society. The first Member of the Welsh Youth Parliament representing Race Council Cymru. Angel used her platform to make impactful contributions to the Welsh Youth Parliament’s proceedings and call for Black and People of Colour’s histories to be a mandatory part of Wales’ new school curriculum.
